NEW YORK, N.Y. - The New York Jets have their new general manager. Next up: a new coach. The Jets hired former Houston Texans executive Mike Maccagnan on Tuesday, replacing the fired John Idzik.Maccagnan was Houstons director of college scouting and the only GM candidate who received a second meeting with the Jets. Maccagnan first interviewed with owner Woody Johnson and consultants Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf last Monday before having another meeting Friday and staying in New Jersey over the weekend. We interviewed a number of impressive, qualified candidates, but Mike Maccagnan clearly stood out, Johnson said in a statement. Mikes attention to detail, strong personnel background and collaborative approach to evaluating players made it clear that he is the right choice to be the next general manager of the New York Jets. The Jets are still searching for a coach to replace Rex Ryan, who was fired along with Idzik on Dec. 29 after a 4-12 season in which the Jets missed the post-season for the fourth straight year.New York interviewed Arizona defensive co-ordinator Todd Bowles for a second time Tuesday — and Maccagnan was involved in the meeting. The Jets are also high on Seattle defensive co-ordinator Dan Quinn, but must wait until the Seahawks are eliminated from the playoffs or the bye week before the Super Bowl to interview him again. As with all teams, there are some areas we need to address, Maccagnan said. But were going to hire the right head coach, evaluate our personnel and work together to build a football operation to get the New York Jets back on the winning track. In terms of the teams power structure, both Maccagnan and the new coach will report directly to Johnson. Maccagnan will have final say on the 53-man roster, while the coach will decide who plays.Johnson chose to go in a new direction at both coach and general manager, despite Idzik only having the job for two years. In order to determine the most suitable candidates, the owner hired the services of Casserly and Wolf, both experienced and well-respected former NFL general managers. The Jets interviewed seven candidates for the GM job, and Maccagnans strong background in personnel impressed Johnson. He has very little experience on the business end, in terms of salary cap issues and contracts, which was Idziks strength. But Maccagnan is known to have a terrific eye for talent.Mike Maccagnan is an outstanding football man, one who is highly organized, and an excellent evaluator, Casserly said. He is very thorough in his preparation and will do a terrific job for the Jets.Maccagnan has close ties to Casserly, which likely bolstered the new GMs chances. He had been with the Texans since 2000, when Casserly — then Houstons general manager — hired him and contributed to every draft since the teams inception. Maccagnan also previously worked with Casserly in Washington, where he was a scout for the Redskins for six seasons. He was promoted to director of college scouting for the Texans in 2011 after previously working as the teams assistant director. He also has spent time in the scouting and player personnel departments of the CFLs Ottawa Rough Riders and Saskatchewan Roughriders, and the World Leagues London Monarchs, as well as the World Leagues offices.Maccagnan grew up in Hightstown, New Jersey, about an hour south of the Jets facility in Florham Park.He beat out six other candidates, including Tampa Bay director of player personnel Jon Robinson, Miami director of college scouting Chris Grier, Philadelphia director of pro personnel Rick Mueller, Seattle director of pro personnel Trent Kirchner, Cleveland executive chief of staff Bill Kuharich and Jets senior director of football administration Rod Graves. In my line of work, Maccagnan said, having the chance to serve as a general manager is what you work toward your entire career. The first order of business for Maccagnan will be helping the team find a new coach.Once thats sorted out, Maccagnan will have a solid salary cap situation with the Jets, who enter the off-season about $40 million under the cap. He will have several key decisions to make in the next several months, including figuring out the quarterback position.Geno Smith mostly struggled through his second season, and the Jets could opt to upgrade the position through free agency or the draft, in which they hold the No. 6 pick. Oregons Marcus Mariota and Florida States Jameis Winston are considered the top quarterbacks who could be available, but both could be gone before New York selects.Maccagnan will also need to address the cornerback spot, which heavily contributed to the teams struggles last season because of injuries and inconsistency. Star defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson is in line for a new contract after a solid fourth season, and Maccagnan must determine whether wide receiver Percy Harvin, a midseason acquisition, is worth a $10.5 million cap hit. Left tackle DBrickashaw Ferguson ($11.7 million) and centre Nick Mangold ($10.4 million) will also be hefty cap hits.I have enjoyed getting to know Mr. Johnson during the interview process and am grateful to him for this opportunity, Maccagnan said. We have a solid foundation of players and a state-of-the-art facility in one of the most exciting and dynamic areas in America.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLGrant Hill Jersey . Im coming home, Im coming home.TORONTO -- The Toronto Marlies are hoping they learned from last years post-season experience as they enter their second round matchup against the Chicago Wolves on Friday. Toronto swept the Rochester Americans in the first round of the 2013 Calder Cup playoffs, had eight days off before the second round, dropped Game 1 against the Grand Rapids Griffins 7-0 at Ricoh Coliseum and eventually lost the series in six games. The Marlies are currently on a six-day break following their first round sweep of the Milwaukee Admirals. "Thats something we didnt do very good last year," said Marlies starter Drew MacIntyre, who posted a .955 save percentage and a 1.55 goals-against average in the first round. "AHL playoffs is frustrating in that sense. You get long layoffs regardless and weve got to do a better job than we did last year." Game 2 of the series goes Saturday before moving to Toronto May 14 for Games 3, 4, and 5 in a 2-3-2 format. Toronto (45-25-6) went 1-1-0 in two meetings against the Midwest Division-winning Wolves (45-21-10) during the regular season. Marlies goaltender Garrett Sparks, who started both games against Chicago during the regular season, grew up less than 18 kilometres from All State Arena, the home of the Wolves. "Theyre very dynamic offensively, but we match up very well against them, our systems are very solid and were going to have to do our best to neutralize them," said Sparks, who is expecting friends and family in attendance at the Chicago games. "If we play our game, ultimately we give ourselves the best chance to win." One benefit of the six-day break for the Marlies is the opportunity for key forwards to get completely healthy. Both Peter Holland (lower body) and Spencer Abbott (shoulder) will make their post-season debut in Game 1. The pair, along with Carter Ashton who missed the first two games of the first round with a knee injury, skated on a line together Wednnesday at the teams final practice before leaving Toronto.dddddddddddd The additions of Abbott and Holland could make decisions difficult for coach Steve Spott, who will likely have to scratch veterans. "Its going to be tough," said Spott. "Were going to have to make sure that everyone is communicated to, well be honest, well be transparent and those guys will get their chances." Spott is quite familiar with the Chicago Wolves coaching staff as coached Wolves coach John Andersons son, Spencer, during his OHL days in Kitchener. The Marlies coach also played for Wolves assistant coach Dave Allison with the ECHLs Richmond Renegades during the 1990-91 season. "I know its going to be a tough series," said Spott. "Theyre dynamic, their skilled, theyve got a great veteran presence, a goalie I know well in Jake Allen from our World Junior team -- arguably one of the top goalies in the American Hockey League. "Were going to have to be smart, were going to have to be structured in all three zones against this team because if we give up odd-man rushes and we take poor penalties theyre going to capitalize." Allen, who won the leagues top goaltender award during the regular season, is 3-2-0 in five starts this post-season. He has a 2.85 goals-against average and a .890 save percentage. Wolves forward Dmitrij Jaskin is the AHLs leading scorer after the first round with two goals and five assists in five games. Defenceman Brent Regner added six points in the five games to lead all Chicago blue-liners Marlies Jerry DAmigo is tied for second in league scoring with six points in three games while captain Trevor Smith had five assists in the Milwaukee series. "Theyre a veteran team, they have a lot of good guys," said DAmigo, "but were a strong team too so were going to do our home work on them, we have these past few days and were going to be ready to play on Friday."
